API-579 provides a number of useful solutions for
Stress Intensity Factor. These appear to address
crack-like flaws in plate. I have not been able
to find recommendations for dealing with crack-like
flaws at toes of butt welds. In PD-6493, they provide
Mk to address cracks at toes of welds.
For shallow flaws, Mk may have values
of 2.0 or more. Fatigue cracking at a weld toe is
a common issue and an Mk of 2.0 will
have a dramatic effect on remaining life or inspection
period estimates. Are you aware of any provisions
in API 579 that address this issue? Regards, Bill
Buchter. Find
