| FITNESS
FOR SERVICE EVALUATION OF CLAD REPAIR
TWI recently helped Tasman Pulp and Paper
develop a clad repair of a corroded pulp digestor. Because
of potential caustic cracking, a conventional repair with
a thin "wall-papered" layer of stainless steel
could not be employed. TWI suggested depositing a band of
Inconel 625 weld metal at each end of the clad region. This
band was then given a stress relief heat treatment before
the stainless steel cladding was welded to the Inconel 625
weld metal. The fitness for service of the repair was checked
using a fracture mechanics approach for defect assessment.
The local jurisdiction was convinced that the repaired digestors
were fit for service, and they are now operating safely.
