Fitness for Service Assessment of Composite Components

11/13/03

On Wednesday 14th January 2004 AEA Technology in conjunction with Newcastle University (Centre for Composite Materials) are hosting a 1 day event to discuss the issues surrounding the fitness for service assessment and integrity management of components made from composite materials. The attached document summarises the plans for the day and agenda.

The aim of the 1 day meeting is to gauge interest in forming a workgroup to address this topic of assessment of in-service composite components. The HSE will begin the meeting by putting forward their current views on the problems associated with integrity management of composite components. The initial output of the workgroup would be a guideline document providing inspection (NDT) and assessment advice on the various types of defects that could be present in composites.

The workgroup would be self-funding, i.e. members of the workgroup would pay a fee for membership. Cost of membership will be a function of the number of interested parties but an estimate would be of the order of 5,000 to 7,500 pounds for phase 1, development of the guidelines.
